SANDPOINT— Intermax Networks today announced the completion of their first phase of Fiber
Optic cable construction into downtown Sandpoint. Sandpoint has been underserved for fiber access
due to geography and the high cost of building infrastructure for many years.
Fiber optic networks have largely replaced copper wire or coaxial communication networks over the
last 10 years as the core transmission vehicle to carry large amounts of data with high speeds and
low latency. This is important for businesses whose transactional needs often include virtual
private networks, VoIP, and large video transmissions.

Intermax has added a new client database and account management system that will be a benefit to customers and Intermax alike. This will allow you access to your account online to manage your payments and account information. This portal will be adding functionality to manage your own email accounts, access your VOIP settings, and ultimately to track your usage and monitor your network health.
We've sent an email to customers letting them know about how to access the new portal and information on setting up their accounts. That can happen at any time using the email account we have on file as the primary account holder.
For safety and security reasons we are not sending any credit card or ACH payment information by email, and are asking you to update that payment information to the most current account for you. Q: How do I choose an internet provider for my home?
A: The first question is "can I get service at my house?" If the answer is yes, then the next criteria is speed of the service. If you are happy with the performance, then the next criteria might be price. And, layered over all this is reliability.
Q: What service can I get at my house?
A: If you are in a rural area, you usually have two types of service from which to choose - private microwave service from InterMax and service from either one of two satellite service providers - HughesNet or Wild Blue. In the more densely populated areas like Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, Post Falls, or Rathdrum, you might be able to buy DSL service from the phone company (Verizon), or cable data service from the cable TV supplier (Time Warner).
Both DSL and the cable service are absolutely "location specific" to populated areas. Some cell phone companies are also promoting "broadband cards" for your laptop. This service runs on the cell phone network and offers at best the same reliability as your cell phone. Think about how you have come to tolerate dropped calls and service "holes" with your cell phone. That quality of service may not be suitable for your internet connection.
Satellite service - HughesNet and Wild Blue - this is a connection to a satellite 22,000 miles out in space much like a TV satellite connection. It is a satisfactory alternative for TV because the signal just comes down to your house in a stream and time delays caused by distance don't matter. In the internet use of this technology, the signal begins as an inquiry from your computer, goes up 22,000 miles to the satellite, is processed by the computers in the satellite, then goes down to earth another 22,000 miles with your inquiry. Then your inquiry goes over the earthbound internet system to get your answer, then back over the earth system to the outbound satellite system, then up 22,000 miles to the satellite, processed there again, then down 22,000 miles to your computer. Whew... are you tired yet? It is like driving to Spokane via Los Angeles. So while the service is slow, and is sometimes sporadic, it is faster than dialup and if it is all you can get, it becomes your best choice.

Lake Pend Oreille School District in Sandpoint, Idaho has always had a “Yes You Can!” attitude. Since the dawn of the World Wide Web, the district’s teachers have held cupcake bake sales to help fund dial-up Internet service for the district’s remote, rural schools and dug ditches for lines connecting one school’s network to another. Technology funding remains a challenge for the school district, but thanks to Intermax Networks the district’s days of dial up Internet and isolation from the world outside on the web are chalk dust. Even schools in the farthest reaches of the district – geographically one of the largest school districts in Idaho – have blazing fast Internet access. "COEUR d'ALENE -- The Silver Lake Mall was once again the scene of strange science as North Idaho students in grades 1-8 demonstrated their inventive minds in the 20th year of Invent Idaho.
About 100 kids, some partnering, showed 92 examples of their ideas for new or improved products.
"Some are really high quality," said Beth Brubaker, a Lakeland gifted and talented teacher and co-founder of Invent Idaho. "That was especially so in the area of research, to see if it had already been invented."
